Future advice

I just read this article on Huffington Post http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ferrett-steinmetz/dear-daughter-i-hope-you-have-awesome-sex_b_3755185.html. It's basically a letter from a father to a daughter about life, growing up, discovering yourself, sex, and the hopes the father or any parent may have for their kids.

I've save the words to hopefully recall upon and use in the future, when I need to pass on some advice or just express my hopes.

Start Here

My mom doesn't read my blog. Nor do I have her as  friend on Facebook. I beleieve there are certain things parents should not know and should not get involved in/with. My desicions to unfriend my mom stems from issues with the sister-in-law and cousin/adopted sister. But I'm not going there today with this entry...

Last night my parents brought me my car. The brakes went on it and well its important to have functioning brakes, and I'm not a fan of driving my truck with no 4x4 in the winter (not that you would know its winter I woke up this morning and the snow is melted and felt like a lovely spring day!).

Luckily I have connections, my mom teaches, er, is the special education teacher at the high school, so technically she doesn't teach one class but helps students in all classes. But the shop class is happy to work on vehicles, so buy the parts and free labour to get my vehicle fixed. My car was at the school for a week, but its fixed now. And I have to say a shout out to the shop teacher, he runs his shop like a trusted mechanic should run his shop, they only fixed what needed to be done, even though it was more than I expected, apparently having a 14 yr old car is a money pit. But at the same time he also knows what his students can do, we originally had asked if they could fix my transmission and 4x4 in the truck and Mr. ShopTeacher said he'd love to take on that project but unfortunately didn't trust this group of students to take on the project, my truck is still waiting. Thank goodness I'm a Burkholder and as tradition would have it own more that one jalopie of a vehicle.

Back to last night, car was returned, we had a short visit and a cup of tea. Parents left. Or I thought they did. A few minutes later dad comes in the house, can't find his keys. Oh OH! Time passes as we search for the keys, in the house, in his pockets, in the truck in the melting snow. Nothing, so it was decided I'll take them home to get the spare key and bring dad back. Mom got out of truck, door shut, BEEP BEEP! oh OH! Doors mysterially lock, locking their dog, Molly inside. We all freeze, someone must have stepped on the keys, we check, nope. Huh?! I take them home, on the way home I tell them about the Disney Character question. My dad didn't pick said a villian would be fun, my mom said no to any of the princesses, and no to a villian she'd be a sidekick but didn't say which one. The conversation verved a little bit, she said she's been having students not know what they want to do after high school, and really I don't blame them who knows really what they're passionate about at 17 and what and where they want their life to go, its a tough decision for anyone. To help them, or anyone she's come up with a couple of questions as a place to start:

1. What did you ove to do when you were 5-7 years old? What games did you play? Where did your imagination take you?

2. If money was no object, meaning you'd get paid no matter what you were doing, what would you do?

My answer to the second question came fast and without a doubt. Travel. See the world. The first question I asked my mom if I played with animals when I was young she yes yup, and now that I think about it I had a rediculously large stuffed animal collection, some of which I still have. She also said I was a good traveller even as a child. Maybe its weird or ironic that that's what I went to school for, Travel and Tourism and Animal Grooming.  Huh, maybe she's onto something, maybe you have to look to your past to see your future....

Drama Queens and Kings

Drama Drama Drama!

Pick your battles is something my mom would tell me.

For the most part I think I stay relatively low key on the drama spectrum of things. I can recount every huge drama fight/disagreement with my family and friends I've ever had. Generally I'm not the instigator though sometimes I am. And if I am in the wrong I will make amends. If I am not in the wrong I am not backing down on the matter, however depending on the circumstances I will choose to put the matter aside and move on.

I have had my share of dealing with crazy friends and not understanding their choices. Most of which usually had something to do with their boyfriend at the time. All of those "battles" eventually ended when the relationship did, some was a few months others a few years.

The most recent of these drama filled relationships is with my cousin, whom my parents became legal guardian of when she was 14. The same one that just started college. I've reached my limit with dealing with her mood swings and change of self due to the douche bag, master manipulator of a bf she's dating. The lastest drama last night was over a marriage licence application I had found that the two of them had filled out and left in a book of house design plans on the kitchen table at my parents. When I found it I went a little crazy, told my mom, her mom, left her a letter saying how disapointed I was in her. I also talked to a couple friends about it, some said I over reacted, others that they would have done the same. They now can't find the application, the douch bag is blaming me for taking it -why would I take it, they could just as easily get another one if they're serious about getting married?!? I didn't take it, but one of the friends I confided happens to be a cousin of the douch bag, and was talking to douche bags mom and said something about it and I don't know what she then told her son, but he's flipped his shit and I don't understand all this bull poop over a piece of paper. A piece of paper that I'm almost 100% sure my cousin lost or threw out and is now afraid to admit to douche bag cuz she sees how mad he is and doesn't want that directed at her.

It's crazy and insane and I'm done. I don't need to be drawn into this teenage drama bullshit. Its a battle I choose not to participate in. Hopefully my cousin can see Mr. douche bags flaws before too much damage is done. It's time to live and learn baby girl.

Why are some people so prone to drama?

Band-aid Removal

What‘s the best way to remove a band-aid? Just go for it and rip it off or slowly work at the edges taking time and care?

I‘ve usually been one to take my time, acess the situation and then carefully, slowly, with afflicting as little pain as possible take off the band aid. My question is do you approach life conflicts with the same enthusiam as you do with a band-aid?

I do. I would much rather avoid conflict of any kind than to jump in and rip and tear at things. But which way is healthier? One of my recent conclusions is that you need to find a healthy medium, sometimes its better to avoid and take the less painful approach but other times you should be assertive and direct. My years of constance avoiding, procrastinating and burying my head/thoughts in the sand have come to bite me in the perverbial ass.

How does one change their methods of coping with conflicts or band-aids after years of doing the opposite?

Insomnia

I haven‘t been sleeping. There‘s lots that has been happening. A couple hours of sleep a night is not enough, i miss sleeping a solid 8 hrs. I started the path to getting this all figured out but its going to be a long road. I‘m hoping that by getting back to blogging will me on that journey.
